Lake Atitlan Retreat with Younique Yoga – February 20202020-03-09T09:31:24-07:00

Project Description

led by Sarah, Amanda, and Stef

February 29th – March 7th, 2020 Villa Sumaya, Lake Atitlan, Guatemala

Join Younique Yoga for a 7-day Yoga Retreat on the shores of beautiful Lake Atitlán, Guatemala. We’ll indulge in a daily yoga practice; stretching, sweating and meditating while overlooking the deep blue, serene lake and Volcano only yards away. Our days will be spent practicing Vinyasa, Restorative or Yin Yoga and exploring the unique, exceptional beauty of Guatemala by hiking the local volcanoes or visiting local villages – only accessible by boat. If you prefer to spend your days relaxing, Villa Sumaya provides a tranquil sanctuary – offering healing huts, a beautiful spa, a quiet hot tub and sauna, or the ability to relax on the docks while overlooking the surrounding nature. All of our activities are optional, giving you an abundance of time to spend with new friends or the ability to find a deeper connection within yourself.

Younique Yoga offers hot vinyasa yoga at 4 locations throughout New Jersey. Our instructors focus on strength, flexibility, and balance to offer a physically invigorating vinyasa yoga practice. In addition to our Vinyasa practice, our teachers also offer Restorative Yoga, Yin Yoga & Reiki!

Amanda, Sarah and Stef worked together to create Younique’s first annual Retreat located in Tulum, Mexico in January of 2019. Although it was our first retreat, every single one of our attendees left smiling, spiritually awakened, and found new life-long friends. Whether you are traveling by yourself or bringing a friend and/or partner, you will find like-minded, fun, individuals to spend your free time with. All of our classes we provide on the schedule are optional, but you will find that you will want to join us for each and every one! Along with our yoga offerings, we will spend time visiting the volcanoes, local villages, engaging in spiritual activities together, and more!

Amanda is Younique’s almighty Manager for the Jersey Shore! In addition to teaching many studio classes and private lessons each week, Amanda manages 3 successful Younique locations – and also runs the Younique Yoga Teacher Programs down South – certifying over 100 instructors to date!

Amanda puts her heart and positive energy into each class, creating a fun environment which is bound to have you laughing to the next pose! Amanda is also an amazing adjuster, guiding you into one of the deepest childs poses of your life! In Guatemala, Amanda will be guiding us through some of the most fun Vinyasa classes you’ll ever take, filled with great music from the decades.

When she’s not on her mat, Amanda spends time with her trainees, is on a run, or spending time on her local beach in Asbury Park, NJ!

Sarah is an artist hailing from Oceanport, New Jersey who graduated from the Younique Yoga 200-hour Vinyasa teacher training 3-years ago. Sarah is a professional dancer, and found her love for yoga as it was a perfect balance between her high energy performances and the need to relax, meditate, and stretch.

In addition to teaching Vinyasa, Sarah also guides Restorative Yoga – her classes are 2-hour workshops filled with deep relaxation, essential oils, sound healing, along with reiki assistance from Stef to heal any stale energies. Sarah has also gone through vigorous adjustment trainings – so you will find a deeper stretch in all of your poses with her assistance.  In Guatemala, Sarah will be guiding you through fun, energy-filled Vinyasa classes to start and end your day and beautiful candlelight Restorative practices to end your evening with. Be prepared for one of the deepest relaxations of your life!

When she’s not on her mat, Sarah spends time teaching dance, spending time with her dog Cabo, visiting the beach or enjoying a nice meal! Sarah also provides Essential Oil blends for all of your needs as she does have her own company – Turn to Nature!

Stef first found yoga seven years ago, and since that day, she has been hooked to the practice. She found herself reflecting and making positive changes both on and off her mat. Yoga is a driving force behind her thoughts and actions and with this, she gained a deep understanding of her practice. She eventually went on to complete her 200 hour teacher training at Younique Yoga in order to spread her knowledge and love of the practice to others.

In addition to teaching Vinyasa, Stef also guides Yin Yoga and is a Reiki level 2 practitioner. In Guatemala, Stef will be guiding us through invigorating Vinyasa Flows, meditative Yin practices, all while providing Reiki for any unstuck energy.

When she’s not on her mat, she spends time with her animals, traveling to new places, volunteering her time with local non-profits, or attending workshops/trainings in order to deepen the knowledge she so generously spreads.

Villa Sumaya Retreat Center
Villa Sumaya, located in Santa Cruz la Laguna on the shores of Lake Atitlán, was conceived in 2001 with the purchase of the lakefront Maya Rose House. Since then, the property has expanded into the expansive retreat center it is today.  Villa Sumaya offers two yoga spaces: the Blue Tiger Temple and the Tara Temple.  Whether relaxing restorative is calling you or you prefer an exhilarating vinyasa practice, the Blue Tiger temple can accommodate any style for groups as large as 40 with plenty of blocks, straps, blankets and bolsters for everyone.  The property also features a restaurant and boutique shop, where you may purchase many types of handmade artisanal Guatemalan goods to bring home and remind you of your stay on beautiful Lake Atitlan. There are also a variety of stylish accommodations.  Choose to stay in private hillside bungalows, the Lotus House guest rooms, or the luxurious Ginger Suites. Each room or suite has its own special personality, with options such as fireplaces or private terraces.

After class when it is time to relax, visit the pool, hot tub, sauna, or any of the four healing huts where a wide variety of spa services are offered.  Get the full Mayan experience by participating in an authentic healing cacao ceremony or an invigorating fire ceremony. Experienced healing guides are available for massage, Reiki, Tarot readings and many other options. In Sanskrit, Sumaya means ‘a long-awaited dream come true.’ Find your long-awaited dream come true, at Villa Sumaya.

The Restaurant
The restaurant offers a stunning view of the lake and a vegetarian-based eclectic blend of local and international cuisine created from Guatemala’s cornucopia of fruit and vegetables. Chicken and fish are also available each day for an additional charge. Villa Sumaya also offers a juice bar featuring exotic smoothies and home-brewed kombucha. Their extensive self-service hot beverage bar offers over 30 delicious teas and artisan coffee available 24/7 and delicious raw homemade treats such as cacao bliss balls, fruit rolls, granola bars, and savory sprouted flax crackers are available for purchase at any time between meals.

The Lake & Surrounding Area
The landscape of Lake Atitlan features three volcanoes. Facing the lake from Villa Sumaya, to the far right sits the oldest volcano, San Pedro. Directly in front of the Villa are two volcanoes, Tolimán and Atitlán. Volcán Atitlán is the only one of the three believed to still be active, though its last eruption occurred in 1853. Most of the year, the volcanoes are clearly visible in their supreme grandeur. Stand out on the pier and catch a boat to any of the surrounding lake villages, each with their own special flavor and local offerings.

Luxury Suites are larger than standard rooms and include a sitting area or living room as well as a private patio.
All Luxury Suites have either a King or Queen bed in addition to private bathrooms and stunning views of the lake and volcanoes.
Standard rooms come in two flavors:
Maya Rose House – Rooms in Maya Rose are in a row with great views of the lake, private bathrooms, semi-private patio spaces, and are near the main courtyard
Skyline Bungalows – Perched atop the property, you’ll have to climb a few stairs to reach your room… but the views and quiet will make it worth it!

This retreat is currently SOLD OUT.
Send us an email to be added to the wait list. If there are cancellations or we add more rooms to the retreat, we will reach out to those on the wait list in order.

Full refund (less deposit) permitted for cancellations before November 1

Are there payment plans available?2019-06-17T20:54:01-07:00

Yes! Once you pay the deposit to secure your spot on the retreat, we will reach out to discuss a payment schedule for the remaining balance. Our goal is to make our retreats accessible for everyone so whatever we can do to help ease the financial strain of booking a retreat, we will do our best to accommodate.

Can I book a shared room if I’m a solo traveler?2019-06-17T20:54:48-07:00

Yes! Once the deposit is paid, we will reach out to talk about potential roommate preferences and do our best to accommodate. If you have any additional questions/concerns, drop us an email:

Do I need to bring a power adapters/transformer?2019-06-18T08:40:14-07:00

Voltage and outlet type do vary by country and may be different than what we have in the US. Consult this site for a country by country reference on power: Plug, socket, & voltage by country

Do I need to bring my yoga mat or any props?2019-06-17T21:01:27-07:00

You’re more than welcome to bring your own mat and/or favorite yoga props! The retreat center is fully stocked with mats, blocks, straps, bolsters, and blankets that we’ll be using throughout our retreat.

Do I need to exchange money? What is the local currency?2019-06-18T08:44:12-07:00

The local currency of Guatemala is the Guatemalan Quetzal (GTQ).

Most places on the Lake will accept US dollars. You might not get the best exchange rate though so it’s always a good idea to have some Guatemalan Quetzals on hand. For example, the water taxis only take GTQ. It will be best to try to exchange money or go to the ATM at the airport in Guatemala City since there are only a few ATMs on the lake and none within close proximity to Villa Sumaya.

Does Villa Sumaya have WiFi?2019-06-18T08:37:37-07:00

Villa Sumaya does have wifi for a fee ($3/ day or $20/week)

Have you ever hosted a retreat at Villa Sumaya before?2019-06-21T17:33:45-07:00

Yes we have! Click HERE to see how it went!

How do I pay for spa treatments, alcohol, excursions, ceremonies, etc.?2019-06-18T08:33:48-07:00

For all costs that are not included in the price of the retreats, you can simply charge to your room and settle your bill with Villa Sumaya at the end of the retreat. Villa Sumaya accepts $USD, Guatemalan Quetzals, US personal checks, travels’ checks, and credit cards*.

*There is a 6.6% fee on credit cards

I have a food allergy, can the retreat center accommodate me?2019-06-17T20:55:27-07:00

Generally speaking, yes – the retreat centers that we work with are accustomed to accommodating a wide range of food allergies and dietary preferences. If you have any doubts or would like to double-check, please write us at:

Is it going to be awesome?2019-06-17T20:50:40-07:00

yes, yes it is.

What if I have to cancel?2019-06-17T20:57:21-07:00

We understand that life happens and things don’t always go as planned. You can find the retreat-specific cancellation policy listed in the “Book a Room” tab of each retreat. Beyond that, we’ll do our best to find a solution that works for everyone. Generally speaking, if you (or we) are able to fill your spot, you’ll get most if not all of your money refunded so let us know as early as possible.

As much as we’d like to have a single blanket policy, each retreat center has its own policy regarding cancellations, unfilled rooms, and our payment schedule to them. As we near the retreat start date, chances are all rooms have been fully paid for and it will be very difficult, if not impossible, to get any of that money back. We’re not out to take anyone’s money so if the response is that we’re not able to give you a refund, it’s because the decision is out of our hands.

Bottom line with cancellations – we understand and want to help so the sooner you can let us know, the more options we’ll be able to work with.

What payment methods do you accept?2019-06-23T13:10:02-07:00

You can pay directly on the site using PayPal, Venmo, or any major credit card (via the PayPal Guest Checkout).

If you prefer another method of payment (for example ApplePay, Zelle, or personal check), please CONTACT ME and we’ll get that set up for you!

What time should I plan to arrive to GUA? What time should I plan to depart from GUA?2019-06-21T11:02:01-07:00

For arrivals on 2/29/2020…
You should plan to arrive in the morning or early afternoon. We will have shuttles set up throughout the day to accommodate people arriving on different flights. However, Villa Sumaya is about 3 hours from Guatemala City Airport so in order to arrive to Villa Sumaya in time for the welcome dinner, we would like to have the last shuttle leaving GUA at around 3pm. As the retreat gets closer and I have everyone’s flight info, I will be sending out a shuttle schedule.

For departures on 3/7/2020…
Same idea: the trip from Villa Sumaya to GUA is about 3 hours so you don’t want to book a flight too early. Ideal departure time would be early afternoon so that you can wake up, enjoy one final breakfast, and then prepare for the journey home.

If there are any questions/doubts/concerns on booking flights, please feel free to reach out and double check:

Will my cell phone work?2019-06-18T08:36:51-07:00

We recommend checking with your provider. Most plans require purchasing an additional international plan for cellular data before your trip—cost varies depending on provider. You can also turn off your cellular data altogether and use your phone through Wifi. If you have an iPhone, you can still send iMessages and make internet voice calls to other iPhone users. With any smart phone, you can download apps like WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, or Skype to be able to talk, video chat, and text over a Wifi. I definitely recommend downloading these apps before your trip if you plan on using them just in case internet is slow upon arrival. Another option (for those that have ‘unlocked’ phones) is to buy a prepaid SIM card in the airport.
